Academic content
Purpose
Students will gain theoretical and historical insights into translation studies as well as a critical understanding of central problems concerning translation into Faroese or their mother tongue. The main emphasis will be on literary translation.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students should be able to: - Read theoretical texts on translation analytically and critically, - Explain central theoretical views and concepts of translation studies, - Translate texts using an appropriate theoretical grounding, - Reflect on the choices they make in the texts they translate, - Analyse and discuss a translated text applying suitable concepts and theoretical perspective.
Content
Translation is the oldest part of both literary and linguistic studies. Today digitalization and globalization influence the status of translation and make translation studies one of the fastest growing university subjects worldwide. Bearing in mind that the position and importance of translation in a linguistic microsociety is different from its conditions in a large linguistic society, students will have an opportunity to translate texts themselves and discuss each others’ translations. Important theoretical standpoints and overall trends will be presented and discussed and measured with regard to Faroese conditions. Last but not least, we will consider issues related to translating into Faroese.
Learning and teaching approaches
Lectures, written exercises in translation, and analysing translations in regard to theoretical views that will be presented during the course.
