Academic content
- Purpose
- The aim of the course is that the student obtains solid theoretical and practical knowledge of the discipline of lexicography, both regarding monolingual and bilingual dictionaries. The student must also know the differences between lexicography and terminology. In addition, the aim is that the student learns how lexicography is carried out, how lexicographers work with mono- and bilingual dictionaries, and that he/she learns about editorial principles in lexicography, about structure, lexicon, definitions of words, translations between languages, sources, target audience etc.
- Learning outcomes
- On completion of the course, successful students can demonstrate that they are able to: • Describe lexicography og explain the characteristics of lexicography as a branch of science. • Explain and assess the main differences between dictionaries and terminologies. • Explain how lexicography is carried out in practice relating to lemma selection, micro- og macrostructure, and sources etc. • Assess quality of dictionaries and terminologies. • Assess translations in bilingual dictionaries.
- Content
- Monolingual and bilingual dictionaries will be discussed theoretically as well as practically. The theoretical part is based on lexicographic research, especially Nordic studies, and the practical part is mainly based on Føroysk orðabók (the monolingual Faroese dictionary), but also on bilingual Faroese dictionaries. In the study of Føroysk orðabók emphasis will be on micro- and macrostructure, lexicon, definitions, use markers, sources, examples etc. In addition, in the bilingual dictionaries translations between languages will be analysed. Main focus is contemporary dictionaries. However, focus on old dictionaries and terminologies will also be included, but to a lesser extent. In the terminological part the main differences between lexicography og terminology will be studied.
