Academic content
Purpose
To provide a foundation in world history from the Middle Ages to around 1750, with special focus on European history and history rooted in Europe. This course is also aimed at people with a general interest in history.
Learning outcomes
Successful students can demonstrate ability to: • exhibit a broad understanding of the course of history during the Middle Ages and up to around 1750 • formulate fundamental questions on European history predating 1750 • expand their own horizon independently and acquire new knowledge on the subject.
Content
The course affords students broad knowledge of fundamental connections in world history in the Middle Ages and up to 1750, as well as knowledge about the basic social conditions in European societies during this period. The course emphasises familiarising students with sound specialist literature on the subject, as well as enabling them to communicate this knowledge to others.
Learning and teaching approaches
The duration of the course is approximately 30 hours. The teaching and learning approaches used are lectures, presentations and discussions. Students are required to choose a subject at the beginning of the course, on which they will give a presentation to the rest of the class. This presentation is a prerequisite for taking the course examination.

Assessment method
Oral examination assessed externally according to the marking scale in force. Giving a class presentation is a prerequisite for taking the exam (please refer to the Learning and Teaching Approaches).
