Academic content
- Purpose
- The course is intended to give pastors knowledge and consciousness of the liturgy and hymns used in the National Church of the Faroe Islands.
- Learning outcomes
- Having completed the course, the students will be able to: • describe Faroese liturgy, its history, and present resources • analyse hymns with regard to their author, original context, and use in contemporary worship • define and evaluate present liturgical trends discuss liturgical and hymnological considerations to be made when composing a service
- Content
- The first half of the course will explore these liturgical subjects: • Rites and content: former Danish and Norwegian rituals that have been used in the Faroe Islands, authorised Faroese rituals and agendas • The lay reader’s service and the human resources in large and small parishes • Descriptions of the service in fictional literature • The church buildings and their artefacts The second half of the course will concentrate on the following subjects: • Hymnological theories • The history of hymnals, The hymnbook of the Faroese Church and the Supplement from 2013 • Faroese hymn writers and their relation to the religious and cultural history An analysis of selected hymns, their form, content, and function

- The course will take the form of lectures, discussions, and student presentations.
