Purpose
The purpose of the course is to enable the student to appraise (1) special needs education in conceptual terms, i.e. both as its own field in educational studies and as part of general education, (2) special needs education in practice, with a focus on different challenges, which demand special attention, and (3) working methods with a focus on approaches to work with challenges in special needs education.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students must be able to explain, consider, discuss, and reflect upon • what characterises special needs education as a concept, both as its own field in education studies and as part of the general educational system; • special needs education in practice, focusing on challenges in the learning, behavioural and social contexts that require attention from special needs education; and • working methods concerning special education needs, teaching differentiation, inclusive special needs education and cross-professional and cross-sectional collaboration.
Content
The course is divided into 3 main interrelated areas. The areas are: o Special needs education as a concept: a unique field in educational studies and part of the general educational system: o Trends in special needs education o Special needs education in the Faroe Islands o Special needs education in practice: challenges in special needs education concerning pupils in: o Challenging learning contexts o Challenging behavioural contexts o Challenging social contexts o Working methods: approaches to working with challenges in special needs education: o Special needs education o Teaching differentiation o Inclusive special needs education o Cross-professional and cross-sectional collaboration
Learning and teaching approaches
We use presentations, collaborative learning, group work, analysing cases, discussion groups, presentations from course participants, short written papers, individual readings, etc.
Assessment
Assessment method
The assessment method is divided into two: (1) The course participants must work with challenges in special needs education in their schools during the course. They have to document how they have organised the work. This work must be approved by the course teacher before the final assessment paper is written. (2) The course participants must write a short academic paper (7-10 pages) which relates to one or several challenges in special needs education in the school system. The paper shall be presented orally.
