Academic content
Purpose
In this course, the students will gain insight into the various facets of the teaching profession and the daily, weekly and annual pedagogical and didactic responsibilities of the teacher. The student should gain an understanding of the collaboration between teachers and (1) the school management (2) colleagues (3) parents and other relatives.
Learning outcomes
After completion of the course, the student should be able to: • Talk in depth about the teaching profession and the challenges involved in being a teacher. • Explain how the teacher plans the course work for a year, week and day • Explain with examples about book systems what relevant subjects materials are available – and can be recommended in different subjects and class levels. • Explain different teaching methods and know when one method is better than another. • Reflect on formative and summative assessment and estimate how different assessment methods can be used in school • Define the responsibilities of the classteacher • Explain how a good relationship with parents and good teamwork can be organized • Make a plan for outdoor education and reflect on, when it is “fit–for-purpose” to adopt this approach.

The themes in the course: • Teacher profession – navigating between the subject, pedagogy and the personal • Curriculum, syllabus and lesson plans • Teaching content – textbooks and course • Teaching methods – from auditorium to laboratory • Assessment, examination and giving marks • Parent-teacher cooperation – meetings and homework • Teamwork – class team, task team and interprofessional teams • The class teacher – the distinctive teacher in school • Outdoor education • Practicum
Learning and teaching approaches
The various teaching approaches comprise: Short and long lectures, study groups, different kinds of student presentations, writing tasks and varied study projects.

Assessment method
(1) The assessment is a writing task. The students write an assignment in groups about two or more topics in the course (2) The students defend the assignments individually. A detailed description of the examination assignment is provided in a separate document.
