Academic content
Purpose
In this course, students will acquire (1) basic competences in using various research methods within the field of education and (2) knowledge of fundamental theories that inform these methods and shape them.
Learning outcomes
Upon completing the course, the student should be able to • explain basic concepts in theory of science and research methods • explain and compare various research methods • explain and compare scientific theories • assess the characteristics of valid research and discuss how research in the field of education should influence decisions made within the educational system • prepare a research design in the field of education

• Basic concepts in theory of science and research methods • Positivism • Hermeneutics and Phenomenology • Constructivism • Questionnaires • Interviews • Observations • Empirical research in the field of education

The course includes independent study, lectures, discussions, group work, exercises, group presentations and workshops

Active participation. In order to pass the course, students must be active in group work and hand in assignments throughout the course
