- Purpose
- To provide participants with an advanced understanding of the complexity of teaching, learning, assessment and supervision in higher education. The course emphasises reflective practice and professional development, and equips participants with evidence-based approaches, practical strategies and pedagogical tools to enhance the quality of their teaching, assessment and supervision to ensure quality in courses/modules taught.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to: Critically evaluate concepts of effective teaching and the attributes of effective teachers, drawing on current research and scholarship in higher education Analyse and apply principles of constructive alignment in the design of coherent learning outcomes, teaching activities, and assessment strategies Design and justify fit-for-purpose assessment approaches, including formative, summative, peer and self-assessment, in relation to student learning and performance Critically apply supervision as a dialogic and developmental process, supporting student autonomy and clearly defined academic outcomes

- The course covers the following main topics: • Definitions and conceptualisations of university teaching and learning • Principles of effective teaching in higher education • Diverse teaching approaches and their contribution to student-centred learning • Teacher cognition and self-efficacy, and their role in professional development • The role and design of assessment - formative and summative approaches • Feedback for learning - characteristics of effective feedback and student engagement • Supervision as a dialogic process - roles, expectations, power dynamics and supporting student autonomy
