- An academically oriented upper secondary diploma with a good average mark in Faroese (i.e. at least 5.8 on the 7-step marking scale or 8 on the marking scale from 00 to 13).
- Language of instruction
- The course is taught in Faroese. The instructional materials are in Faroese, and Scandinavian languages. Presentations, assignments, exams etc. are in Faroese.
- Registration
- Students on the first semester of Bachelor of Arts in Faroese Language and Literature, and Subsidiary Subject Studies in Faroese Language and Literature are automatically enrolled. Applicants for an individual course must apply via the Student Service Center at lss@setur.fo

Academic content
- Purpose
- This course equips students with knowledge about and understanding of literature in the Nordic region from the Middle ages up to around 1876. The course enables students to describe literature in relation to genre and origin, as well as to place and to describe texts as born out of cultural trends.
- Learning outcomes
- Successful students can demonstrate ability to: • Explain Nordic literary history during the period with special emphasis on Faroese literary history. • Explain Faroese oral literature. • Explain the connection between the Faroese, Nordic and international perspectives in literary history. • Describe the main events and trends in literary history during the period. • Compare literary forms and the cultural and social contexts they are part of.
- Content
- Students will read Medieval West Nordic fiction literature. Genres within oral literature in the Faroes make up around a third of the coursework. Both fiction and non-fiction literature, which has lived and been used in the Faroes and represents literary trends during this period will be discussed. Works of theory and literary history are part of the material discussed.
- Learning and teaching approaches
- This class-based course is structured as three-hour weekly sessions over one semester. The main learning and teaching strategies used are lectures and student presentations, in addition to oral and written exercises, which students will complete individually or in groups.
