The student must have completed the first part of the BA in Faroese or equivalent. It is also possible to take the course as a single course with other prerequisites (refer to the programme description in force).
Language of instruction
The course is primarily taught in Faroese but some lectures might be in English as well some English

Students on the forth and sixth semester of B.A. in Faroese enroll via Moodle. Applicants for an individual course must apply via the Student Service Center at lss@setur.fo

Academic content
Purpose
The aim is to develop students’ competences in understanding the connection between language and identity in relation to adult migrants’ language learning, based on Faroese and international research. The aim is furthermore to provide students with insight in identity as a a multifaceted phenomenon and key theoretical concept in applied linguistics and in second language learning.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, students are able to • Describe theories of identity in relation to second language learning • Explain aspects of identity as a multifaceted and interdisciplinary concept in second language acquisition • Describe the experiences of adult migrants when learning Faroese as an additional language in different social contexts • Describe and discuss the significance that imagined identities, broadly speaking, have for adult language learners in a Faroese context
Content
The course comprises the following main topics: • Theories about identity in connection with language learning • Identity as a multifaceted phenomenon (e.g. nationality, language, gender, ethnicity, social class, religion, education, profession) and the relationship between identity and second language learning • Adult migrants’ experiences with learning Faroese as an additional language: Multifaceted narratives, diverse and shifting identities • Methods of researching questions on identity and additional language learning • Imagined identities and investment in a new language • Small exploratory projects
Learning and teaching approaches
