The course is primarily taught in Faroese but some lectures might be in English as well some English

Purpose
Endamálið er at menna førleikar teirra lesandi at skilja sambandið millum mál og samleika við atliti at annaðmálslæring hjá vaksnum tilflytarum, grundað á føroyska og altjóða gransking. Endamálið er harumframt at geva lesandi djúptøkið innlit í samleika sum ástøðiligt meginhugtak í nýtslumálvísindum og annaðmálslæring, og at geva teimum vitan og førleikar, ið viðvirka til at menna frálæru í føroyskum sum annaðmál í einum fleirmæltum konteksti.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, students are able to • Describe and assess theories of identity in relation to second language learning • Explain and discuss aspects of identity as a complex, multifaceted, and interdisciplinary concept in second language learning and teaching • Describe and analyze the experiences of adult migrants when learning Faroese as an additional language in different social contexts • Describe and evaluate the significance that imagined identities, broadly speaking, have for adult language learners in a Faroese context • Describe and reflect on the role of the teacher in relation to knowledge about the adult language learner in the context of teaching Faroese as a second language
Content
The course comprises the following main topics: • Theories about identity in connection with language learning • Identity as a multifaceted phenomenon (e.g. nationality, language, gender, ethnicity, social class, religion, education, profession) and the relationship between identity and second language learning and teaching • Adult migrants’ experiences with learning Faroese as an additional language: Multifaceted narratives, diverse and shifting identities • Methods of researching questions on identity and additional language learning • Imagined identities and investment in a new language • Small exploratory projects
Learning and teaching approaches
Lectures, group work, discussions, formative assessment, individual and group presentations, self-directed reading, small assignments and exploratory projects.
