Academic content
Purpose
The aim of this course is that the students gain basic insight into the medieval written sources on Norse mythology and the way in which bodies are treated in these sources. Students should develop the ability to analyse these sources based on relevant literary and social-scientific theories.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student should be capable of: • analysing written sources on Norse mythology • analysing the texts applying theories of oral literature • searching for and applying appropriate theories for interpreting descriptions and symbolism of bodies in the texts • making theoretically backed assessments about how these texts may provide insight into the minds of the medieval societies which produced them
Content
The course explores the way in which bodies are used as communicative media and symbolic resources in medieval texts on Norse mythology. By applying interdisciplinary theories from literary studies and social sciences, the course will investigate if and how we may gain insights into the minds of those who conferred these stories onto paper and of ourselves, through studying descriptions of bodies in these textual sources.
