Academic content
- Purpose
- The aim of the course is to introduce students to artistic research and teach them to use research as part of their artistic practice.
- Learning outcomes
- By the end of the course, students should be able to: - explicate different conceptions of artistic research, - analyse works that are based on artistic research, - evaluate potential connections between art, knowledge, and science, - develop independent artistic research projects, and - present examples of their own artistic research.
- Content
- Over the past decades, artistic practice has become ever more research-based and artistic research has become a regular feature of the activities at universities and other institutions of knowledge. This course asks what artistic research is and how such research resembles and deviates from other kinds of research. What methods may artistic research be said to follow? What are it results? And what connections are there between artistic and scientific research? To answer these questions, we will investigate different conceptions of artistic research. Among the topics to be considered are the relation between art and knowledge, the artist as researcher, and artistic practice as an independent mode for acquiring knowledge and new working methods. Own research is a foundational component of the course. Over the course of the semester, each student develops an independent research project and presents this project for the final examination.
