Academic content
Purpose
The student will gain substantial insight into translation studies theoretically and historically as well as critical understanding of central problems concerning practical translation into Faroese. Emphasis will be put on literary translation. Moreover the student will acquire knowledge of specific traits of Faroese translation history.
Learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete the course will be able to: •Read theoretical texts on translation analytically and critically. •Explain theoretical views and concepts of translation studies •Explain central traits of Faroese translation history •Translate a literary text into Faroese •Analyse and discuss a translated text applying suitable concepts and theoretical perspective.
Content
Translation is the oldest part of both literary and linguistic studies. Today digitalization and globalization place translation in a new perspective contributing in making translation studies one of the fastest growing university subjects worldwide. Bearing in mind that the position and importance of translation in a linguistic micro society is different from conditions in a large linguistic society the course will dive into characteristics of the history of translation in the Faroes during 200 years although our emphasis will dwell on recent times. Important theoretical standpoints and overall trends will be presented and discussed and measured on the Faroese conditions. Last but not least we will discuss and work on problems connected to translating into Faroese.
Learning and teaching approaches
Lectures by instructor, oral presentations by students, written exercises in translating and analyzing translations in regard to theoretical views presented at the course.

Assessment method
Piece of written homework (two weeks) on a given subject or Piece of written homework on a subject chosen by student and approved by instructor.
