Academic content
- Purpose
- The purpose of the course is for the students to acquire a thorough knowledge of the core concepts and theories of multilingualism. The students also gain in-depth insight into multilingualism and second language acquisition in a diverse linguistic and cultural landscape, both internationally and locally, with special emphasis on the Faroese context.
- Learning outcomes
- Students who successfully complete the course can demonstrate ability to: •Explain and evaluate concepts and theories within the field of multilingualism • Explain and reflect on second language acquisition in a Faroese context • Describe and discuss the importance of language for identity regarding second language acquisition • Explain and discuss multilingualism in relation to working life, learning and in the public • Explain and assess multilingualism in a Faroese context
- Content
- The course covers the following main topics: • Theories of multilingualism and second language acquisition • Language acquisition and different learning conditions, e.g. in young people, families and historically • Language and identity of the multilingual • Multilingualism in a Faroese context
- Learning and teaching approaches
- Classes are organized as teacher presentations, self-study, student presentations, and discussions. Smaller assignments and group work are also part of the course.
