Academic content
- Purpose
- The purpose of the course is to provide students with a foundation in Faroese fishing history and provide a broad knowledge about how fishing became the main industry in the Faroe Islands, and how this has affected the country for the last two centuries.
- Learning outcomes
- At the conclution of the course, the students can demonstrate ability to: • explain the fundamental course of Faroese fishing history • see similarities between Faroese fishing history and the fishing history of the naboring countries • explain fundamental concepts and terms that are used in the research of fishing history • assess the impotance of the fishing industry in various periods • independently present and discuss a specific topic in the field in order to acquire new knowledge
- Content
- This course will provide students with a broad knowledge about Faroese fishinghistory, and its effect upon the economy and society at large. The Faroese history wil be compared with similar histories in naboring countries. The starting point will be fishing in open boats in the pesant society, and a focuspoint will be the efforts to start seagoing fishing in the middle of the 19th century, and the course will follow the development of the industy through the 20th century. The course will give the students knowledge about relevant literature on the subject and provide an opportunity til obtain an ability to present this knowledge to others.
- Learning and teaching approaches
- The duration of the course is approximately 30 hours. The learning and teaching approaches used are lectures, presentations, exercises and class discussion. Students are required to select a topic and formulate a problem, which they then prepare a presentation on for the rest of the group.
Assessment
- Assessment method
- The examination consists of an individual paper, approximately 6000-7000 words, on a perspective or subject approved by the lecturer and an oral exam based on the paper and follow-up questions for added perspective and context from the course bibliography. Students are expected to demonstrate their ability to make an analysis based on the topics mentioned in the Learning Outcomes. Prior to the written examination, each student is required to give an oral presentation.
