Academic content
Purpose
To provide students with knowledge of ecotoxicology and pollution, environmental chemistry, as well as the interaction between pollutants, the environment, and living organisms and ecosystems
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students should be able to: • Understand the sources, types, exposure, and fate of environmental pollutants. • Mention the most important functional groups determining the environmental properties of organic pollutants. • Understand toxicokinetics and toxicodynamics, focusing on the uptake, distribution, and internal processing of toxicants, their interactions within organisms, and their potential for bioaccumulation and environmental impact. • Apply methods for detecting, quantifying, and monitoring environmental pollutants. • Evaluate the ecological and health impacts of pollutants using risk assessment methodologies.
Content
Ecotoxicology. Environmental toxicology. Environmental chemistry. Pollutants. Environmental compartments. Partitioning. Toxicokinetics. Toxicodynamics and molecular interactions. Bioaccumulation. Population ecotoxicology. Risk assessment and regulation.
