General and Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Earth, Ocean and atmosphere I or equivalent courses
Language of instruction
The course is taught in Faroese and Danish. Instructional materials are in Faroese, Scandinavian languages and possibly English. Group work, presentations etc. are in Faroese.

Students on the fifth semester of B.Sc. in Biology are automatically enrolled. Applicants for an individual course must apply via the Student Service Center at lss@setur.fo

Academic content
Purpose
The aim is to provide a basic, thorough, and broad knowledge of aquaculture, in particular of salmon and seaweed. Emphasis is placed on description of the environment, important steps in the aquaculture and slaughter process, fish health and diseases, and about aquaculture legislation in biologically sustainable aquaculture.
Learning outcomes
o Assess what circumstances in the ocean impact the conditions for marine aquaculture o Explain the process of selecting breeding and the production of roe o Describe the process of smolt production o Analyse “Recirculating Aquaculture Systems” and parameters that are being monitored o Assess environmental issues related to aquaculture o Discuss the production of salmon feed and nutrition o Describe the organisation of harvest, slaughter, processing, packing o Discuss salmon louse and delousing methods o Describe the production of different seaweeds o Discuss fish health and diseases and what measures prevent the spread of disease and infection o Recall aquaculture legislation, laws and regulations, and the process of environmental authorisation
Content
• Ocean, temperature, light, currents, waves, • aquaculture cages and cage nets, oxygen, modelling, • selective breeding and roe production, • Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), • smolt production, • marine aquaculture, • salmon feed and nutrition, • fish health and diseases, fish welfare, risks of infection, • lice and delousing methods, cleaner fish, lumpfish, • harvest, slaughter, processing, packing, transport, • pollution, environmental considerations, environmental authorisation, aquaculture legislation, laws and regulations. • Farming various seaweed species.
Learning and teaching approaches
Lectures, numerical exercises, essays, mind maps, group work, presentations, self-reading and excursions to aquaculture facilities.

Assessment method
Oral examination in an evaluated course report. A prerequisite for being allowed to take the exam is that all course assignments have been handed in and passed.
