Academic content
- Purpose
- To develop the students skills to examine historical questions based on archival studies and the use of records which public archives manage. The students should also familiarise themselves with archives and their importance for society, knowledge and research. The course is also aimed at others, who are interested in or need to familiarise themselves with archives, their role and how to utilise them to their fullest potential.
- Learning outcomes
- The successful student can demonstrate ability to: • retrieve, read and assess concrete archival records, • account for and evaluate archive material to solve concrete history assignments, • identify, evaluate and explain the the main tasks and activities of archives and their legislative framework, • assess the role archives play in different areas of society
- Content
- The teaching includes practical exercises in finding, reading and using source material in archives. In addition, the teaching includes relevant laws and basic rules for archives, types of material that archives collect and about the theoretical basis for archival activities.
- Learning and teaching approaches
- The duration of the course is approximately 30 hours. The learning and teaching strategies are exercises, including training in archival research and reading old scripts/records. There will be lectures and debates about archival matters as well. During the course, students are required to complete a set number of assignments, which will be determined by the supervisor and completed under their supervision.
