Academic content
- Purpose
- The purpose of this course is to give the student basic knowledge of quantitative methods, which are used in connection with research. Briefly, this means collection of quantitative data, explanation of theory and method, analysis and dissemination of results. Emphasis is placed on the student being able to demonstrate in practice that she/he is able to carry out small investigations that are relevant to their current or future profession as managers.
- Learning outcomes
- • Explain the basic parts of quantitative and qualitative methods, as well as explain the different possibilities and limitations of these two methodological approaches and how they can complement each other. • Explain different types of quantitative research, e.g. cross-sectional studies, time-series studies and longitudinal studies • Plan - and logically explain the different phases of a quantitative study, depending on the topic to be investigated • Construct questions and answer options that can be counted, or scaled • Understand the difference between the different survey types and how they are planned, e.g. visitor interviews, telephone interviews, internet-based questionnaire surveys, etc. • Finding and analyzing register data • Use statistical analysis tools, e.g. univariate- and bivariate analysis • Hypothesis testing and correlation • Clearly be able to communicate research results in the form of pictures and tables • Assess and relate critically to the meaning, validity, reliability and generalizability of the study.
