Purpose
The course aims to help students acquire knowledge and insight into the core areas of social studies in primary and early secondary school. Students will gain foundational insight into the discipline’s identity and purpose and in-depth knowledge of the core areas in the primary and early secondary school sociology curriculum. The aim is for students to acquire the foundational knowledge that enables them to design learning processes in sociology for primary and early secondary school.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student must be able to: - Explain basic economic, sociological, and political concepts. - Examine independently selected texts and data from the media based on relevant concepts, including linking concepts to examples and finding examples to illustrate concepts. - Compare different perspectives on current societal issues. - Compare current events with previous societal stages. - Discuss and evaluate various real and hypothetical events, both qualitative and quantitative. - Critically evaluate various types of sources.
Content
The course has three main parts, each covering approximately 3 ECTS. The last ECTS is dedicated to an introduction, source criticism, field trips, exams, etc. - Economics: Personal finance and work. Welfare systems. Resources and export. Economic policy and national economy. - Sociology: Social changes. Socialisation and identity. Social stratification and integration. Demographic changes and globalisation. - Politics: Political parties and ideologies. Democracy and human rights. The primary and early secondary school in the political system. The municipal sector.
Learning and teaching approaches
Lectures, independent study, discussions, group work, presentations, smaller assignments, and field trips.
Assessment
Assessment method
Active participation. Throughout the course, students will give oral presentations to the instructor and classmates and complete smaller assignments. These assignments must be satisfactorily completed to pass the course.
