Academic content
- Purpose
- In this course students will learn to understand the role of worldviews and ethics in their profession. They will 1) acquire insight into important aspects of traditions that have shaped Faroese society, including Christian and modern traditions, become aware of how these influence the teaching profession, and learn to respect and make room for people from diverse backgrounds in their work and profession; 2) understand basic ethical theories and concepts and be able to use them in the teaching profession; and 3) begin to consider their own role as future teachers, whose task it is to support children in their personal and social development.
- Learning outcomes
- On completion of the course, the student should be able to • consider the role various traditions, especially Christian and modern traditions, have in Faroese society, considering in particular the Faroese school’s role in formation • describe and compare various ethical theories, and show how these are relevant in their profession • identify and discuss professional ethics in the teaching profession, considering both the pupils teachers care for and the official frameworks they work within

- • Values and the purpose statement in the Parliamentary Act on the Faroese School System • Basic ideas in Christian and modern traditions that have shaped Faroese society and the Faroese school system • Important tenets in Western democracies, such as modernism and secularism • Basic ethical traditions and concepts • Ethical development and formation in schools • Ethics and the teaching profession
