Teacher's degree and two years' experience as a teacher in primary and upper secondary school
Language of instruction
The course is taught in Faroese. Instructional materials are in Faroese, Scandinavian languages and English. Case-studies, presentations, assignments etc. are in Faroese.

Academic content
Purpose
The purpose of the course is to enable the participants to (1) mentor pre-service teachers during the practicum period and (2) guide newly qualified teachers in the first year of teaching
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, students must be able to: • explain how teacher education is organized and what role the practicum and the practicum supervisor have in the context of teacher education • differentiate between different theories of guidance and mentoring • describe the challenges pre-service and newly qualified teachers face when planning teaching sessions • assess pre-service teachers and newly qualified teachers’ skills in relation to (1) classroom management, (2) establishing good relations with the pupils and (3) creating meaningful and differentiated teaching • organize constructive meetings with pre-service teachers and newly qualified teachers where important topics are discussed • evaluate the teaching of pre-service teachers and newly qualified teachers and formulate concrete recommendations.

The course is in 9 parts. - The primary and upper secondary school and teacher education - Teacher education in the 2020s - Good teaching and good teachers - General pedagogy - themes and challenges - Subject pedagogy - themes and challenges - Theories of practicum guidance and theories of mentoring - Ethical considerations in connection with practicum guidance, mentoring and evaluation - The practicum as a special learning context in teacher education - Challenges that newly qualified teachers face in the first year of teaching
Learning and teaching approaches
Lectures, cooperative teaching, group work, case work, discussion groups, presentations from the participants, short written assignments, self-studies, online teaching
Assessment
Assessment method
The examination is in three parts (1) The participants must have a pre-service teacher in practicum throughout the course and document how they have organized collaboration with the students from start to finish. This part must be approved before the participant can sit the final exam. (2) The participant must write a short academic assignment (7-10 pages), which is based on one or many challenges which practicum supervisors and/or mentors for newly qualified teachers have to deal with in their work. (3) The assignment must be defended orally. - In the oral defence, the participants are tasked with being opponents of each other.
