A bachelor’s degree in health sciences or another relevant bachelor’s degree.

The course is taught in Faroese. Instructional materials are mainly in Danish, as well as in English and other Scandinavian languages. Lectures, group work, discussions etc. are in Faroese.

Purpose
In this course, students will gain insight into social issues relevant to health and welfare in the Faroe Islands.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student must be able to: - Describe health policy and welfare system frameworks for services provided by the health and social services in the Faroe Islands - Explain the demographic development in the Faroe Islands historically and more recently and its significance for health-related issues - Describe the Faroe Islands as a ‘small scale society’/small island society using relevant theories and academic articles and explain the significance of this for health sciences - Analyse social issues that are important for health and welfare - Analyse and assess the significance of sociocultural issues for health-related concerns in general and in the Faroe Islands in particular - Analyse the Faroe Islands as a framework for phenomena and initiatives in health sciences - Assess scientific articles that discuss social issues and health

The particular foci of the course are as follows: - Demographic development in the Faroe Islands - Health policies and welfare - The Faroe Islands as a ‘small scale society’/small island society - Sociocultural issues and their significance for health and welfare in the Faroe Islands - Social inequality and health - The organisation of social and health services in the Faroe Islands
Learning and teaching approaches
A mix of lectures, discussions, group assignments, presentations, and indepndent study. Students will receive both oral and written feedback from the instructors and fellow students.
