- A bachelor’s degree in health sciences or another relevant bachelor’s degree.
- Language of instruction
- The course is taught in Faroese. Instructional materials are mainly in Danish, as well as in English and other Scandinavian languages. Lectures, group work, discussions etc. are in Faroese.

Academic content
- Purpose
- In this course, students will gain knowledge and understanding of scholarly practice, academic writing, and research in health sciences. They will acquire knowledge of and skills in qualitative and quantitative methods and the scientific theories that inform these methods. They will develop skills in assessing scientific articles in health sciences at the master’s level. Students will also develop skills in conducting a review.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon completion of the course, the student must be able to: - Explain various approaches in the theory of science, including hermeneutics, phenomenology, social constructionism/constructivism, and positivism - Describe the historical development of theories of science - Explain the significance of theoretical approaches for a chosen method - Explain methods used in qualitative research, including interviews and observation - Explain methods used in quantitative research, including surveys, cohort studies, and intervention studies - Demonstrate proficiency in conducting a structured literature search - Show insight into argumentation theory and ability to use it in academic writing - Assess international scientific research in health sciences - Show the ability to organise one’s own work in a coherent and systematic review

- - Qualitative research methods, such as interviews and observation - Quantitative research methods, such as surveys, cohort studies, and intervention studies - A selection of theoretical approaches underlying qualitative and quantitative methods, such as phenomenology, hermeneutics, social constructionism/constructivism, and positivism - Structured searches on scientific databases and assessment of scientific articles - Formal requirements for academic writing, such as argumentation theory, referencing and formatting - Developing one’s own research (review)
- Learning and teaching approaches
- A mix of lectures, discussions, group assignments, presentations, and independent study. Students will receive both oral and written feedback from the instructors and fellow students.
