- Language of instruction
- The course is taught in Faroese. Instructional materials are mainly in Danish, as well as in English and other Scandinavian languages. Lectures, group work, discussions etc. are in Faroese.

Academic content
- Purpose
- The purpose of this course is for students to acquire knowledge about the nursing profession and basic needs. In addition, the purpose is for students to develop the skills required to analyse nursing practice questions and to develop academic working methods.
- Learning outcomes
- Students who successfully complete the module can demonstrate ability to: • Explain nursing as a care profession in relation to historic and contemporary perspectives • Identify areas of application within nursing: meaning legislation, guidelines and codes of conduct and professional theory and their significance for nursing • Describe different perceptions of human nature • Describe the main defining characteristics of the natural and social sciences as well as the humanities • Explain the basic needs of humans based on Virginia Henderson’s theories and Fundamentals of care (FoC) • Search for and find research-based knowledge discussing basic needs • Analyse nursing research questions from the perspective of basic needs • Express themselves in writing and orally about nursing practice questions targeting basic needs • Discuss using hypothesis, arguments and sources • Describe key concepts in communication • Describe the concepts care, relationship, aesthetic, etiquette and body perception • Provide personal hygiene care with due consideration for modesty, intimacy, integrity and preventing the spread of infection • Execute hand hygiene according to the applicable hygiene guidelines • Collect data using clinical methods • Describe the role and are of work of the various categories of professionals nurses work with • Describe the Faroese social system and the structure of the health and social care system and the municipalities • Describe key concepts and theories on heath promotion and prevention in relation to fundamental nursing • Describe the codes of professional ethics in nursing and describe what characterises professional ethics • Take responsibility for own learning and demonstrate ability to cooperate with teachers and fellow students
- Content
- Teaching is delivered in the form of both a theory component and a clinical practice component. The contents of the theory component is: • Academic reading • Online e- searches • Assessing sources • Evidence and evidence hierarchy • Nursing as a profession • Curology and patientology with emphasis on curology • Introduction to theory of science/research methods • Perceptions of human nature • History of nursing • Theory and nursing theory with emphasis on care and establishing relationships • Introduction to law: The Healthcare Act (Heilsulógin) with a focus on confidentiality, regulated professions, the patient’s legal status, precautions and conscientiousness • The concepts of health promotion and prevention and introduction to Nola Pender’s Health Promotion model • Basic needs as defined in Virginia Henderson’s theory • Theory of Fundamentals of care (FoC) • Body and body perception • Skin and skincare products • Introduction to sociology and social systems, including the structure of the national health and social care system and municipalities • Introduction to ethics, codes of conduct and ethical guidelines in nursing and professional ethics • Introduction to philosophy • Introduction to communication and communication exercises The contents of the clinical component in the practice lab is: • Introduction to the practice lab as a place of education • Personal hygiene, oral care and ear flushing • Communication exercises • Reflection • Required study activity (refer to portfolio) o Hand hygiene o Bed making o Collecting and assessing vitals The contents of clinical teaching and learning in the setting of a residential care homes (4-day short professional placement): • Hand hygiene • Bed making • Personal hygiene • Collecting vitals • Communication and relationships • Reflection
- Learning and teaching approaches
- Teaching and learning is organised as alternating lectures, dialogue, cases, group work, self-study and writing assignments. In addition to skills exercises in the practice lab and a short professional placement (punktpraktikk) in an approved clinical placement setting.

- Approval of the required study activity is a condition for admission to assessment. Written group assignment. Refer to the examination requirements.
