Purpose
For students to train skills in and gain insight into: • guidelines for administration of intravenous medication, side effects and related procedures • guidelines for administration of blood transfusions, side effects and related procedures For students to acquire knowledge about and understanding of the relationship between the nurse and the patient in the short meeting. For students to acquire knowledge about and understanding of quality control and quality development in nursing. For students to reflect on organisational culture, different management approaches and care approaches.
Learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete the module can demonstrate the ability to: • explain the responsibilities and competence requirements associated with intravenous therapy, administration of medication and transfusion medication • describe statutory provisions relating to personal electronic data • explain theory about the relationship between nurse and patient in the brief encounter, including the importance of time and conduct • describe the relationship between theory and practice • describe and provide reasoned arguments for evidence-based nursing • describe different relevant clinical guidelines • describe selected methods of quality enhancement related to the nursing profession • reflect on organisational culture, different management approaches and care approaches • assess own learning needs against progress in the course of study
Content
Teaching and learning are divided into three components: First component: • The relationship between the nurse and patient in the short meeting Second component: • Organisational theory and management Third component: • Course in Transfusion medicine and intravenous administration of medication for which 100% attendance is required. The contents of the components are: 1. The relationship between the nurse and patient in the short meeting: • Nursing considering the relationship in the brief encounter • IT in the healthcare system. IT and statutory provisions • Quality development and the implementation of research in practice 2. Organisational theory and management: • Management in general • Various strategic steps in management • Nursing practice management • Organisational culture • Ward rounds and care approaches 3. Transfusion medicine and intravenous administration of medication: • Intravenous hydration therapy and nutrition • IV access • infusion treatment /hydration therapy • parenteral nutrition • administration of medication via IV Nursing associated with IV treatment: • Handling infusion fluid • Adding medication to the infusion fluid • Care relating to parenteral nutrition • Peripheral venous catheter care • Central venous catheter care • Placement of peripheral venous catheters Transfusion medicine: • Blood transfusion history • Basic principles of blood transfusion therapy • blood transfusion complications • Risk of infection associated with blood transfusions • The composition and function of blood • Blood types, antibodies and related tests • Blood safety, virus tests and blood type checks • Production of blood components Nursing related to blood transfusion: • The nurse’s responsibility • Prescription of blood/blood products • Informing the patient • Blood tests and checks prior to transfusion • Setting up a blood transfusion • Observing a patient before, during and after blood transfusion • After blood transfusion (storage, disposal)

Teaching and learning are organised as alternating lectures, dialogue, group work, exercises, and self-study.
